Innovation & Growth

Our New Initiatives

CONSENT continues to innovate and launch new programmes that address emerging consumer challenges in Uganda. Our latest initiatives leverage technology, media partnerships, and grassroots engagement to create lasting impact.

The Media League by CONSENT

The Media League is one of CONSENT's flagship initiatives, established in 2024 to strengthen evidence-based journalism and improve public communication on consumer rights and national development issues across Uganda. What began as a network of 15 journalists and emcees has grown into a nationwide community of over 150 media professionals representing the Central, Eastern, Northern, and Western regions of the country. The initiative provides a structured capacity-building platform where journalists and emcees participate in periodic learning sessions facilitated by technical experts. These sessions cover priority issues including consumer protection, public health, food systems, financial inclusion, standards, digital rights, and other emerging public policy matters that affect Ugandan consumers.

Consumer Complaints Harvest

Since 2024, CONSENT has implemented the Consumer Complaints Harvest, a nationwide initiative that captures consumer experiences with goods and services to strengthen consumer protection, accountability, and evidence-informed decision-making in Uganda. The initiative is implemented through a network of trained youth complaint harvesters deployed across the country's regions. Using CONSENT's secure digital data collection system, they collect consumer complaints in real time from public spaces such as markets, places of worship, hospitals, schools, transport terminals, industrial parks, workplaces, expos, and community events. All complaints are analyzed and compiled into CONSENT's annual Consumer Voices on Goods and Services Report, which identifies emerging trends, sector-specific challenges, and consumer priorities.

  • 11,154 consumer voices collected in 2024
  • 3,981 consumer voices collected in 2025
  • Registered with the PDPO: Reg. No. PDPO-202405-3266

Comparative Product Testing

CONSENT conducts independent comparative product testing to promote transparency, fairness, and consumer confidence in the marketplace. Working alongside consumers, government regulators, and businesses, we verify whether products meet declared weights and measurements using UNBS-calibrated weighing equipment. These exercises enhance regulatory compliance, promote ethical business practices, strengthen consumer accountability mechanisms, and foster fair competition in the marketplace.

Our Running Projects

CONSENT implements a diverse portfolio of active projects across Uganda, funded by national and international partners. These projects deliver tangible impact in consumer protection, public health, food systems, and digital rights.

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC)

Safer Internet for Consumers

With support from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), CONSENT is strengthening digital safety by equipping media practitioners and emcees with knowledge on the safe and responsible use of the internet and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Through the Media League webinar series, participants gain skills to identify, report, and communicate online safety risks, AI-related threats, and practical consumer protection measures, enabling them to educate millions through television, radio, digital, and social media platforms.

Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO)

Personal Data Protection and Privacy Awareness Campaign

Funded by the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO), this initiative builds the capacity of media professionals and emcees on Uganda's Personal Data Protection and Privacy legal framework. Through the Media League webinars, participants are empowered to promote public awareness, strengthen reporting on data privacy issues, and enhance understanding of compliance obligations, consumer rights, and responsible data handling practices.

Consumers International

Clean Air for Consumers in Uganda

With funding from Consumers International, CONSENT is advancing consumer action for cleaner air by documenting key air pollutants in rural and urban settings, engaging polluters to adopt improved waste management practices, raising public awareness on air quality, and advocating with local governments and private sector actors for stronger measures that protect consumers from harmful air pollution.

Supported by AFF, this project strengthens the capacity of media practitioners to promote consumer justice and protection across multiple goods and service sectors. By improving consumer-focused reporting, the initiative enables journalists to educate the public, amplify consumer voices, and promote accountability through television, radio, print, social media, and digital media.

Vital Strategies

Advancing Front-of-Pack Warning Labelling through Mass Media

With support from Vital Strategies, CONSENT is implementing a national mass media campaign to accelerate Uganda's adoption of Front-of-Pack Warning Labelling (FoPWL) regulations. The campaign raises awareness about diet-related non-communicable diseases and empowers consumers to make healthier food choices by promoting policies that require clear warning labels on foods high in sugar, salt, and saturated fat.
